Stadio Olimpico in Rome is home to two clubs — Roma and Lazio — and it's owned by the state, not by the clubs. The approved capacity for football is 70,634 seats, and it sits in the Foro Italico, northwest of the city. A clarification that saves confusion: the stands don't swap between the clubs. The south end, Curva Sud, is Roma's fan home — always, even when Lazio is the official host in the derby. The north end belongs to Lazio's fans. What does change is the away section: in Roma's home matches it's in the Distinti Nord Ovest corner. The two long stands are Monte Mario in the west — the main, prestigious one, named after the hill behind it — and Tevere in the east, toward the river. The roof was installed for the 1990 World Cup and covers all the sectors. Note that the athletics track keeps the stands away from the pitch — that's the consequence of a multi-purpose stadium.
FAQ
How do you buy tickets for a Roma match?
Roma leaves about 30,000 seats for single-match sale at every home match at the Olimpico. This is a deliberate decision: the club caps the number of season-ticket holders at 40,000 — and has refused to raise the cap — so that about a third of the stadium stays available for single-match sale throughout the whole season. So even after season tickets sold out within about twenty days (37,000 renewals plus about 3,000 more from a waiting list of nearly 27,000 people), inventory remains for every matchweek. The only requirement for purchase is a free myASR account with phone and email verification. And it's worth knowing: the club's loyalty card, the AS Roma Card, is the card required to buy away tickets — it's not a requirement for a fan buying a regular seat in the Tribuna, Distinti or Curva. Sale usually opens two to three weeks before the match, capped at four tickets per transaction. Tickets are digital and named, and a matching passport is checked at entry. TikTik gets tickets even for matches that have sold out.
How do you get to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome?
Roma matches at the Olimpico are reached by metro Line A to Flaminio and then tram 2. There's no metro station near the stadium — that's the most common mistake. The official route Roma publishes: metro Line A to Flaminio station, and from there tram 2 to the Piazza Mancini terminus, which is "a few steps from the stadium"; from Piazza Mancini you cross on foot over the Ponte Duca d'Aosta bridge — a single-arch bridge 220 meters long from 1939 — and arrive directly at the Foro Italico. A second official option: metro Line A to Ottaviano and then bus 32. From Termini: metro Line A toward Battistini. In total 19 bus lines serve the area on matchdays. Tip: after the match the bridge and the tram get very crowded — it's worth letting the crowd thin out.
Is there parking at the Stadio Olimpico?
There's no parking at the Olimpico itself — cars park at Piazzale Clodio or Villaggio Olimpico. On matchday parking is banned all day on most streets in the Foro Italico, and the Rome police put up temporary traffic blocks as needed, sometimes including the bridge itself. Piazzale Clodio and the Villaggio Olimpico complex are the parking areas allocated to spectators, and for big events Tor di Quinto is also opened. Around the stadium, spaces marked in white are free with a time limit and spaces marked in blue are paid. There's accessible parking near the Stadio dei Marmi. The club asks fans to enter at the time printed on the ticket, and there's no bag-check service at the stadium. Bottom line: public transport.
How do you get from Israel to a Roma match?
For a Roma match you fly directly from Tel Aviv, and from Fiumicino take the Leonardo Express train to Termini in 32 minutes. There are many direct flights from Tel Aviv to Rome, and the train from Fiumicino airport is direct and nonstop all the way to Roma Termini station — about every quarter hour, from 05:38 to 23:27. From Termini you continue by metro Line A and tram 2 as described above. A cheaper alternative from the airport is the FL1 regional train, but it doesn't stop at Termini — instead at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina. Note: the stadium is outside the Aurelian Walls, so the fixed taxi fare from the airport "to the center" doesn't cover a ride all the way there.
Does an Israeli need a visa to fly to the match?
No. Israelis enter Schengen-area countries visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and all that's required is a valid passport. Worth knowing what's coming: the European Union is launching the ETIAS authorization system in the last quarter of 2026. Once it takes effect, an online authorization will be required in advance, at a cost of €7, valid for three years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first. As of today the system is not active and no action is required from you. Important warning: the EU warns that many sites impersonate the official site, use the EU logo and charge inflated fees or steal passport and credit card details. There is only one official site — europa.eu/etias — and any address not on the europa.eu domain is not official.
Where's the best place to sit at a Roma match?
For comfortable viewing at a Roma match, it's worth sitting in the Monte Mario stand on the halfway line. Curva Sud is one of the biggest curvas in Italy — nonstop singing, flag displays and choreography at the big matches, and it's the first section to sell out. But you should know what you're buying: it's a full-blown ultras stand — standing for the entire match, with flags and banners at the front, and it's not a seat for watching. Our recommendation for a fan who wants to both see and feel it: the Monte Mario stand on the halfway line or central Tevere, and for anyone who wants to be near the noise without being inside it — Distinti Sud Est, right by the curva. What you shouldn't buy by mistake: Distinti Nord Ovest — that's the away section, fenced and separated. In the derby the situation is completely different: the stadium is split in two, with Roma taking the entire south half and Lazio the north.
What's special about Roma's 2026/27 season?
2026/27 is Roma's centenary season — the club was founded in 1927. To mark the occasion, the classic ASR crest returns to the shirt. Roma is a one-city club with a passion that has no equal: today the Curva Sud is a mosaic of neighborhood groups rather than a single body, after the historic unifying group broke apart, and the oldest of them all, Fedayn, was founded in 1972 in the Quadraro neighborhood. In charge is Gian Piero Gasperini, appointed on 6 June 2025 on a three-year contract — he arrived after nine years at Atalanta, where he turned them into one of the most fascinating clubs in Europe, and in his first season at Roma took the team to third place and back into the Champions League after seven years.
What's Roma's big match in the 2026/27 season?
Roma's big match is the Derby della Capitale against Lazio, twice this season. This is one of the most intense atmospheres in the world, and a match where the shared stadium is split in two. Lazio host in matchweek 15, on the weekend of 12-13 December 2026, and Roma host the return leg in matchweek 32, on the weekend of 17-18 April 2027. After it: Inter Milan at home as early as 19 September 2026, Juventus at home in mid-December, AC Milan at home in early January 2027 and Napoli at home in early May. Note that the finish is brutal — six big matches in the last eight matchweeks. At the same time, Roma return to the Champions League after seven years: the draw is on 27 August 2026 and the first matchweek is in early September. Roma open the league at home against Fiorentina on Monday, 24 August 2026 at 20:45.
