The Strokes are performing in Lima, at Estadio San Marcos, on Friday, 20 November 2026. One concert night by the band is open for booking, in one city.
The Strokes are an American rock band from New York. The band was formed in 1998. It won a Grammy Award and rose to fame in the early 2000s.
The Strokes are an American rock band from New York, formed in 1998. Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, and Fabrizio Moretti started playing together as teenagers while attending Dwight School in Manhattan. In 1997, they formed an unofficial band.
Later, bassist Nikolai Fraiture, a close childhood friend of Casablancas, joined. The two studied together at Lycée Français de New York.
In late 1998, the group invited guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. to play with them. He had just moved to New York and met Casablancas again. The two had known each other from brief periods at the private boarding school Institut Le Rosey, near Nyon in Switzerland. Shortly after they met again, they were already sharing an apartment.
Since its formation, the band has kept the same lineup. Casablancas is the lead singer and main songwriter, Valensi and Hammond play guitar, Fraiture plays bass, and Moretti plays drums.
For the two years after forming, the band rehearsed and performed nonstop in New York. In 1999, they performed under the name The Strokes for the first time, at The Spiral. They later became regulars at Manhattan rock clubs, including HiFi Bar and Luna Lounge on the Lower East Side, and later Mercury Lounge.
Ryan Gentles, a young booker at Mercury Lounge, eventually quit his job to manage the band. The band started working on a 14-song set, an early draft of Is This It. It included Last Nite, Someday, Soma, Barely Legal, and New York City Cops, among others. The lyrics to most of these songs are different today.
In 2000, after a performance at Luna Lounge, the band members met producer Gordon Raphael. They recorded a demo with him, the EP The Modern Age. They sent the demo to Rough Trade Records in the UK, where it attracted interest. The EP sparked a bidding war among record labels, the biggest for a rock band in years.
The Strokes' seventh album, Reality Awaits, was released in 2026. The band's debut album, Is This It, was released in 2001.
The Strokes were among the leading bands in the garage rock and post-punk revival of the early 2000s. The EP The Modern Age was released in early 2001, and the band eventually signed with RCA Records. Is This It came out that summer, earning widespread critical acclaim and strong sales.
Is This It was released first in Australia, Japan, and the UK, and only later in the United States. The release dates in Australia, Japan, and the UK coincided with promotional tours in those countries. At the Reading and Leeds festivals, the band was moved up the running order twice, from a tent stage to the main stage, in front of its biggest audience yet. Gordon Raphael produced the album, as well as its follow-up, Room on Fire.
RCA delayed the North American release because of concerns about the cover and lyrics. The international cover is a black-and-white photograph of a gloved hand on a woman's bare buttocks. In the American version, it was replaced with a photograph of particle collisions in the European Big Bubble Chamber. RCA also replaced New York City Cops with When It Started because the song's lyrics could have been interpreted as inflammatory after the September attacks.
Despite the delay, Is This It received critical acclaim. Rolling Stone gave the album four stars. Since then, it has appeared on many lists of the greatest albums of all time. In 2002, the band won the Best International Group award at the BRIT Awards.
Room on Fire followed in 2003, and First Impressions of Earth in 2005. Both albums sold well, but did not match the immediate critical success of Is This It, despite generally positive reviews.
After a five-year break, Angles was released in 2011 and Comedown Machine in 2013. Both were generally well received by critics, but sales declined. After the band's original contract with RCA ended, the EP Future Present Past was released in 2016 on Casablancas's label, Cult. The band was less active for the rest of the decade and performed infrequently. Most media attention focused on the members' solo projects.
In 2020, The New Abnormal was released, the band's first studio album in seven years. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and released through Cult and RCA. It received very positive reviews, with critics seeing it as a return to form. It won the Best Rock Album award at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
