In 1980, an English electronic band called Depeche Mode was formed in Basildon, Essex. It is one of the most successful bands to emerge from the early 1980s new wave and new romantic movements.
The original lineup consisted of Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Vince Clarke. Since Fletcher's death in 2022, the band has consisted of Gahan and Gore.
Depeche Mode has had 54 songs on the UK Singles Chart. 17 of its albums reached the top ten on the UK Albums Chart. The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

Dave Gahan chose the name Depeche Mode. It was taken from a French fashion magazine. Starting with the performance at the Bridge House in 1980, the band changed its name to Depeche Mode.
Martin Gore explained that the name means “fast fashion” or “fashion telegram.” The more accurate translation of the magazine's name is “fashion news” or “fashion update”.
The band's roots go back to 1977. That year, school friends Vince Clarke and Andy Fletcher formed a band called No Romance in China. Clarke sang and played guitar, while Fletcher played bass.
In 1980, Clarke and Fletcher formed a band called Composition of Sound. Martin Gore joined them as a third member. Dave Gahan joined later that year, after Clarke heard him sing David Bowie's “Heroes” at a local jam session.
At a performance at the Bridge House in Canning Town, Daniel Miller, founder of Mute Records, approached the band. Miller wanted the band to record a single for his label.
Vince Clarke left the band at the end of 1981. The remaining three members recorded the second album, A Broken Frame (1982), with Martin Gore as the main songwriter.
Clark was the main songwriter on the debut album Speak & Spell, released in 1981. The album's third single, Just Can't Get Enough, reached the top ten on the UK chart.
After leaving, Clark formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet. He later formed Erasure.
After the release of A Broken Frame, Alan Wilder joined the band. He replaced Clark on synthesizer.
Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993) marked the peak of the band's success. It reached number one in the United Kingdom and the United States immediately upon release. With the release of Violator in 1990, the band members became superstars.
The band's breakthrough with mainstream audiences in the United States and the United Kingdom came in 1984 with the album Some Great Reward. The albums Black Celebration (1986) and Music for the Masses (1987) cemented its status as one of the most popular alternative bands of the 1980s. In 1988, more than 60,000 people attended its concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Violator reached number seven on the Billboard 200. The album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA. It features Enjoy the Silence, one of the band's biggest hits.
Since Andy Fletcher's death in 2022, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have continued as a duo. Their latest album, Memento Mori, was released in 2023.
During the recording and tour for Songs of Faith and Devotion, the band faced internal conflicts, and Alan Wilder left in 1995. Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher reunited as a trio and released Ultra in 1997.
As a trio, they recorded five more albums: Exciter (2001), Playing the Angel (2005), Sounds of the Universe (2009), Delta Machine (2013), and Spirit (2017).
Depeche Mode was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. In 2023, Guinness World Records listed it as the musical act with the most remixes in the world.
