From street harmonica player to knight: Rod Stewart's journey

Rod Stewart's music career began in 1962, when he started busking with a harmonica. He was in several bands before joining the Jeff Beck Group in 1967. In 1969, he joined Faces and also launched his solo career with his debut album, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down.

His full name is Roderick David Stewart, and he was born in 1945 at 507 Archway Road in Highgate, North London. His father was Scottish and worked as a building contractor in Leith, Edinburgh.

Musician Long John Baldry invited him to join the Hoochie Coochie Men, with whom he recorded the single Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. The band changed its name to Steampacket, and in the summer of 1965 opened for the Rolling Stones on tour.

He was a member of Faces until 1975. That year, the band broke up, and he moved to Los Angeles. In 2012, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a second time, as a member of Faces. In 2016, he was knighted for his services to music and charity.
