The album Brat was released in 2024. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, won three Grammy Awards, and sparked a cultural phenomenon known as Brat Summer. It is the sixth album by British singer, songwriter, and actress Charli XCX.
Her full name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison. She was born in 1992 in Cambridge, England, and grew up in Start Hill, Essex. Her mother was born in Uganda to a family of Gujarati Indian origin, and her father is Scottish. She took her stage name from her display name on MSN Messenger because she didn't have another name and didn't have a manager.
In 2008, she began uploading songs to Myspace, which led her to the East London (London) rave scene. In 2010, she signed with Asylum Records (Asylum Records). Her breakthrough came in 2012: she co-wrote and sang on I Love It by the Swedish duo Icona Pop (Icona Pop). It was her first song to reach number one in the United Kingdom, and it was a worldwide hit. Her debut album, True Romance, was released in 2013 and fell short of commercial expectations.
In 2014, she sang on Iggy Azalea's (Iggy Azalea) Fancy. The song became her most-streamed song and one of the world's best-selling singles of the year. This period produced the 2016 EP Vroom Vroom and the 2017 mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop 2. Her third album, Charli, from 2019, features the hit 1999 with Troye Sivan (Troye Sivan). Her fourth album, How I'm Feeling Now, from 2020, was made during the COVID lockdowns and received critical acclaim.
Her fifth album, Crash, from 2022, was her first to reach number one in the United Kingdom and Australia. In 2023, Speed Drive, the song she contributed to the Barbie soundtrack, entered the top ten in the United Kingdom. Apple, from Brat, also reached the British top ten. The remix album earned her her second number-one song: Guess with Billie Eilish (Billie Eilish). Brat and its songs won three Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Dance Pop Recording (for Von Dutch), Best Dance/Electronic Album, and Best Recording Package. Several music magazines named it the best album of 2024.
During the same period, she began acting in independent films. The films Erupcja, Sacrifice, and 100 Nights of Hero were released in 2025, and I Want Your Sex and Faces of Death were released in 2026. Aidan Zamiri's (Aidan Zamiri) The Moment was also released in 2026. The film was inspired by Brat Summer, and she co-produced it and stars in it. That year also saw the release of her seventh album, Wuthering Heights, which is also the soundtrack to the film of the same name, and her eighth album, Music, Fashion, Film.
