The Stadium of Light opened on 30 July 1997 in the Monkwearmouth neighborhood, on the site of an old coal mine, which is also where its name comes from. With 48,095 seats it's one of the largest in England — far bigger than the size of the city of Sunderland would suggest, and that's exactly the story of this club. The four stands are the Jimmy Montgomery Stand in the west, the main one; the two-tier North Stand; the East Stand, which includes the family area; and the South Stand, renamed in December 2018 the Roker End as a tribute to the club's old home, Roker Park. The attendance record was set on 13 April 2002 against Liverpool: 48,353 spectators. In summer 2024 the stadium had 3,000 safe-standing seats installed, and ahead of the 2026/27 season the club expanded the home fans' standing area by more than 2,500 additional seats at the Roker End and in the southwest corner. Address: Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, SR5 1SU.
FAQ
How do you buy tickets for a Sunderland match?
Tickets for Sunderland matches come through the membership draw, whatever remains of general sale, or TikTik. Sunderland has one of the largest season-ticket bases in England — more than 38,000 season tickets out of a capacity of 48,095 — and all of them sold out for the 2026/27 season. The old waiting list, which stood at about 15,000 fans, was closed and reset entirely in July 2026, and a new list opened on 23 July to club members only. The only practical route for a regular fan is the membership scheme launched on 14 July 2026: the Black Cats tier grants entry into a closed draw for home tickets — you enter separately for each match, one ticket per member — and only what's left after the draw goes to general sale. In practice, because of the sold-out season tickets and the return to Europe, most matches are already sold out at the draw stage. Membership does not guarantee a ticket. TikTik obtains tickets for Sunderland matches without membership and without the draw.
How do you get to the Stadium of Light?
You get to the Stadium of Light by Tyne and Wear Metro, St Peter's station — an eight-minute walk. The stadium sits right on the Metro network and this is the best way to get there, and St Peter's is the nearest station; Stadium of Light station on the Green Line is about a nine-minute walk. Sunderland's central train station is about an 18-minute walk. Note the crowd-dispersal method used after the match: anyone heading south boards at St Peter's, and anyone heading north towards Newcastle boards at Stadium of Light. From Newcastle Airport there's a direct Metro from the terminal to central Sunderland in about 55 minutes. Bus lines 2, 3, 4, 12, 13, 15 and 16 stop near the ground. Address: Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, SR5 1SU.
Is there parking at the Stadium of Light?
No — the Stadium of Light has no parking for the general public, only a free Park & Ride. On match day the stadium's own car parks are reserved for hospitality clients and partners only, and the streets around the ground are a strictly enforced resident-parking zone. The official solution is a free Park & Ride, open to both home and away fans, from Sunderland Enterprise Park on the A1231, with easy access from the A19 and clear signage. Buses leave about every five minutes starting 90 minutes before kick-off, and the return pick-up is north of the stadium on Kier Hardie Way. Further alternatives: the University of Sunderland car parks and the Metro station car park.
How do you get from Israel to a Sunderland match?
For a Sunderland match, you fly to London and take a direct train north, or fly with a connection to Newcastle and take the Metro. There is no direct flight from Tel Aviv to Sunderland. Two common routes. The first: a flight to London and from there a direct Grand Central train from London King's Cross station to Sunderland — about three and a half hours on average, with no changes, six trains a weekday. The second, and often the more convenient one: a flight with a connection to Newcastle Airport, from which a direct Metro runs from the terminal itself to central Sunderland in about 55 minutes. You can also take a train from London to Newcastle and then the Metro on the Green Line.
Does an Israeli need a visa to fly to the UK for the match?
Not a visa, but yes an entry authorization. Since 8 January 2025, Israeli citizens have been required to have a UK ETA. The cost is £20, it allows multiple entries and is valid for two years or until the passport expires - whichever comes first - and permits a stay of up to 6 months per visit. You apply on the official website or the UK ETA app. The response usually arrives within a day, but you should allow up to three working days, and you must not fly before the authorization has been received by email.
Where should you sit at the Stadium of Light?
At the Stadium of Light, the loud stand is the South Stand, the Roker End, which holds most of the safe-standing area. This is the home end, and it's where the Red & White Army supporters' group operates, leading a campaign to bring back the historic Roker Roar with giant flags and banners. The Jimmy Montgomery Stand in the west is the main and largest stand, and the East Stand hosts the family area. Away fans sit in the upper tier of the North Stand, behind the goal, and enter through gates 69 to 74, which open 90 minutes before the match — the low roof there creates especially good acoustics and bounces the noise back onto the pitch.
What's special about Sunderland?
Sunderland is a club with a huge fan base — a 48,000-seat stadium and 38,000 season-ticket holders. Its support is far bigger than its results: more than 38,000 season-ticket holders, even after years in the lower leagues. The documentary series filmed about the club during its years of decline made it known around the world precisely because of that loyalty. After an absence that began in 2017, the team returned to the Premier League in May 2025 via the play-offs, and in the 2025/26 season finished seventh with 54 points — the result that brought it back to Europe. French coach Régis Le Bris was appointed in June 2024 after 12 years at Lorient, led the promotion, and in August 2025 signed a new contract until summer 2028. The nickname: The Black Cats.
What is Sunderland's big match in the 2026/27 season?
The big match is Sunderland's first European home match at the Stadium of Light in 53 years. Seventh place in the league qualified Sunderland directly for the Europa League league phase — its first European campaign since the 1973/74 season, when it played in the European Cup Winners' Cup by virtue of winning the FA Cup. The opponents will be decided in the draw held on 28 August 2026 in Monaco, and the first round is held on 16 and 17 September. Next in importance: the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle — away on 5 December 2026 and at home on 1 May 2027. Sunderland open the league away against Ipswich Town on 22 August, and their first home match is against Fulham on Sunday 30 August 2026.
