The Santiago Bernabéu opened in 1947, and after the massive renovation it's no longer just a stadium — it's an enclosed arena under a retractable roof, with a video screen that wraps 360 degrees around the entire bowl, and natural grass stored in an underground greenhouse four floors deep and laid over the pitch only on matchdays. The club has not published an official capacity — Madrid's tourism portal lists 80,242 seats, so the accurate figure is about 80,000. Four stands: Lateral Oeste and Este along the touchlines, Fondo Sur, at the bottom of which is the singing section, and Fondo Norte, where away fans sit at the top. The historic attendance record — 129,690 spectators at the European Cup semifinal against Milan, 1956, on the way to the first of five consecutive cups.
