Pixies is an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986. The original lineup included Black Francis on vocals and rhythm guitar, Joey Santiago on lead guitar, Kim Deal on bass and vocals and David Lovering on drums. The band is associated with the alternative rock boom of the nineties, and also draws from punk rock and surf rock. Its music is known for dynamic loud-quiet-loud shifts and song structures. Francis is the main songwriter, and his lyrics sometimes touch on unconventional subjects such as aliens, incest and biblical violence.
The first mini-album, Come On Pilgrim, was released in 1987. After it came the albums Surfer Rosa in 1988, Doolittle in 1989, Bossanova in 1990 and Trompe le Monde in 1991. Pixies broke up in 1993. In the United States the band achieved moderate success, while in Britain and Europe it achieved greater success. Its alternative sound influenced artists and bands, including Nirvana, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer.
Guitarist Joey Santiago and songwriter Black Francis met in 1984, when they lived next to each other while studying at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Francis spent six months in Puerto Rico studying Spanish, returned to Amherst and left the university; he and Santiago worked in a warehouse in the Boston area. The two began playing together, and Francis wrote songs on acoustic guitar and on lyrics he wrote on the subway. In January 1986 they formed a band, and posted an ad looking for a bassist who liked both folk of Peter, Paul and Mary and alternative rock of Hüsker Dü. Kim Deal was the only one who responded; she came to the audition without a bass, since she had never played the instrument, and was accepted after she liked the songs Francis showed her.
Kim's sister, Kelley Deal, auditioned for the drummer role, but did not continue. Kim's husband suggested David Lovering, whom she met at her wedding, and thus the lineup was completed. Santiago chose the name randomly from a dictionary, because he liked the word and its meaning: small mischievous elves. The band moved rehearsals to Lovering's parents' garage and began performing in bars in the Boston area.
Later the band performed with Throwing Muses and attracted the attention of producer Gary Smith from Fort Apache Studios. Smith was enthusiastic and said he would not be able to sleep until the band was famous worldwide. With funding from Francis's father, the band recorded a demo at the studios, called The Purple Tape because of the purple cover. Ken Goes passed the demo to Ivo Watts-Russell of the British label 4AD; Watts-Russell found the band too ordinary and too rock and roll, but his girlfriend convinced him to sign them. From the recording, songs were selected for the mini-album Come On Pilgrim, released in 1987.
Come On Pilgrim featured songs that Francis drew from his life in Puerto Rico, including Vamos and Isla de Encanta, in which he described the poverty on the island and sang in loose Spanish. The religious lyrics stemmed from his parents' Pentecostal Christianity period. Critic Heather Phares identified themes such as sexual frustration and incest in the band's songs.
The album Surfer Rosa was recorded by Steve Albini and completed in two weeks, and was released in early 1988. For the first time it featured a song sung by Kim Deal, Gigantic. Another song, Where Is My Mind?, later appeared on the soundtrack of the film Fight Club. The album earned the band recognition in Europe: Melody Maker and Sounds chose it as album of the year. In the United States reactions were positive but more measured, and the album was certified gold in the United States in 2005. Afterwards the band signed a distribution deal with Elektra and began working with producer Gil Norton.
Following Surfer Rosa, the band went on tour in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. It came to England to support Throwing Muses on the European Sex and Death tour, which began at the Mean Fiddler in London. In the Netherlands the band already received a lot of media attention.
Doolittle was recorded in the last six weeks of 1988. Gil Norton gave the album a cleaner sound than the previous ones, among other things thanks to meticulous production and a higher production budget. Among its songs was Here Comes Your Man, which biographers Josh Frank and Caryn Ganz described as an unusually light and poppy song for the band. Monkey Gone to Heaven was popular on alternative rock radio in the United States. The album featured, among others, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven, and the songs Debaser, Hey and Wave of Mutilation received a lot of radio play.
Musicians, including Thom Yorke of Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins, admitted that the album Doolittle influenced them. During the Doolittle tour, tension grew between Francis and Kim Deal, who wanted to include more songs she wrote in the shows. After quarrels the band went on hiatus, and later broke up in 1993.
Pixies' popularity grew after the breakup, and in 2004 the band reunited and went on world tours. Kim Deal left in 2012, and on the 2013 tour she was replaced by Kim Shattuck. Later Shattuck was replaced by Paz Lenchantin, who became a permanent member in 2016. With Lenchantin the band recorded the albums Head Carrier in 2016, Beneath the Eyrie in 2019 and Doggerel in 2022. In 2024 Lenchantin was replaced by Emma Richardson, formerly of the band Band of Skulls. That same year Pixies' ninth album, The Night the Zombies Came, was released.
