Metallica Tickets

In Los Angeles, in 1981, vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and Danish drummer Lars Ulrich formed Metallica. The band spent most of its career based in San Francisco. Their fast rhythms, instrumental passages and aggressive playing made them one of the “Big Four” of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Today's lineup includes lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo alongside the two founding members.

From Kill 'Em All to 72 Seasons: Metallica's albums

Metallica has released eleven studio albums, from fast thrash metal in the 1980s to more traditional heavy metal on the last two albums. These are the key milestones along the way.

The debut album, Kill 'Em All from 1983, is considered by many to be the first thrash metal album. The first commercial success came with the third album, Master of Puppets from 1986, considered one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It was followed by …And Justice for All from 1988, which earned the band its first Grammy Award nomination.

The fifth album, 1991's Metallica, also known as "The Black Album," was a turning point: the band moved away from its thrash roots and appealed to a wider audience. The album sold more than 16 million copies in the United States and is the best-selling album of the SoundScan era. It was also the band's first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

After a period of experimenting with other styles and directions, Metallica returned to thrash with its ninth album, 2008's Death Magnetic. Its latest album, 72 Seasons, was released in 2023.

Napster, Some Kind of Monster, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

In 2000, Metallica led the lawsuit against the file-sharing service Napster, which ended in a settlement. The 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster documented the difficult recording of 2003's St. Anger and the tensions within the band at the time. In 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and as of 2023, it had sold more than 163 million albums worldwide.
