Duran Duran are a British pop rock band formed in Birmingham in 1978. The classic lineup includes lead singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, guitarist and bassist John Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor. The band was part of the early ’80s New Romantic scene and was among the acts associated with the music-video wave that led the second British Invasion of the United States.
Their breakthrough was built on songs and videos that presented pop in a visual, cinematic way. “Planet Earth” was the band’s first hit, followed by “Girls on Film” and their debut album, Duran Duran. Their second album, Rio, brought the band wider success, with songs such as “Rio”, “Save a Prayer” and “Hungry Like the Wolf”. The videos for these songs, directed by Russell Mulcahy, helped the band stand out on music television.
Throughout the ’80s, the band continued to build a run of hits. “Is There Something I Should Know?” was their first single to reach number one in the UK, and the remix of “The Reflex” topped the charts in the UK and the United States. “A View to a Kill”, from the James Bond film of the same name, also reached the top of the US chart.
The lineup has changed over the years, but the band has never broken up. The reunion of the classic lineup in 2001 led to tours and the 2004 album Astronaut. The band also scored hits in the ’90s, such as “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone”. These songs offer a look at the later part of their career alongside their ’80s songs.
