From Honolulu to Los Angeles: Peter Gene Hernandez's journey

Bruno Mars is the stage name of Peter Gene Hernandez, an American singer, songwriter, music producer, and dancer born in 1985. He grew up in Honolulu and moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to build a career in music.

He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Peter Hernandez and Bernadette San Pedro Bayot. His father gave him the nickname "Bruno" when he was two, because he thought he resembled wrestler Bruno Sammartino. From the age of four, he performed five days a week with his family band (the Love Notes). In Hawaii, he became known for his onstage impersonation of Elvis Presley.

From the Smeezingtons to 24K Magic

In the music industry, he made his name as a songwriter and as one of the founders of the production team the Smeezingtons. He rose to fame as a singer after appearing on B.o.B's 2009 single "Nothin' on You," which reached number one in the United States. His first three studio albums, 2010's Doo-Wops & Hooligans, 2012's Unorthodox Jukebox, and 2016's 24K Magic, were successful with critics and commercially. The latter won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

"Uptown Funk," a 2014 collaboration with Mark Ronson, was Billboard's most successful song of the 2010s. In 2024, he released two record-breaking duets that reached number one: "Die with a Smile" with Lady Gaga and "APT." with Rosé. The Romantic, his first solo album in ten years, was released in 2026. It was led by "I Just Might," his tenth single to reach number one in the United States.

Career in numbers

Mars has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has ten singles that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He also holds the record for the most weeks at the top of the Billboard Global 200 chart. The 24K Magic World Tour (2017–2018) ranks among the highest-grossing tours in history. His awards include 16 Grammy Awards and 17 American Music Awards. Mars is accompanied by his band, the Hooligans.
