About the stadium
Groupama Stadium, also known as Parc OL, opened in 2016 and is the third-largest stadium in France after the Stade de France and the Vélodrome — 59,186 seats, designed by Populous. A point you must know before booking a hotel: it isn't in Lyon itself but in Décines-Charpieu, about ten kilometers from the city center and about fifteen from Place Bellecour — plan on a ride, not a walk. The stadium is built as a closed bowl with four stands: Virage Nord and Virage Sud behind the goals, and Tribune Est and Tribune Ouest along the sides, with the team benches and presidential box in the east stand. It's an entirely privately owned stadium — rare in France — and part of the OL Vallée complex, which also includes additional facilities. Attendance record last season: 58,257 spectators against PSG in November 2025.
FAQ
How do you buy tickets to a Lyon match?
Tickets to Lyon matches at Groupama Stadium are sold through the club's official ticketing site, and a free account is enough. This is relatively easy, and it's worth knowing. Tickets are sold exclusively through the club's official ticketing platform, and there's no need for paid membership — a free account is enough for most league matches, which is different from many other top European clubs. Sale order: first season-ticket holders, then a window for free-club members, then sale to the general public — usually a few days to a week before the match, not months in advance. Tickets are personalized, and you need to bring ID; anyone arriving with a ticket not in their name is required to bring a photo ID of the buyer. There's also an official resale exchange that opens ten days before every match. Honestly: a 59,000-seat stadium with an average occupancy of 86 percent leaves thousands of seats free for regular league matches — it's one of the more accessible destinations in Europe. What does sell out quickly: PSG, Marseille and big European nights. TikTik gets tickets for those too.
How do you get to Groupama Stadium?
You get to Groupama Stadium on light-rail line T7 to the "Décines OL Vallée" station, right at the foot of the complex. This is the recommended way. Line T7 stops at the "Décines OL Vallée" station right at the foot of the complex, about two to four hundred meters from the gate. Line T3 stops at "Décines Grand Large," from which it's about a ten to twelve minute walk. From Part-Dieu the regular ride takes 25 to 35 minutes; a convenient alternative: metro line A to Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie and then T7. On matchdays frequency increases, and in addition the club runs direct tram shuttles from Part-Dieu and from Vaulx-en-Velin — about a quarter of an hour's ride, but advance booking through the ticket site is mandatory; without an access ticket you don't get on.
Is there parking at Groupama Stadium?
Groupama Stadium has large car parks, but only with advance booking — there's no sale on site. Booking opens about three weeks before the event. For big matches they sell out completely. The good alternative: the two park-and-ride sites — Meyzieu Les Panettes and Eurexpo Chassieu — free with booking, with a direct shuttle of under a quarter of an hour. There's also a free covered bike park next to the club store, and carpool users get free parking on matchday. The gates open an hour and a half before kick-off, and the recommendation is to arrive at least an hour ahead — and for big matches, two to two and a half hours.
How do you get from Israel to a Lyon match?
From Israel you fly to Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport — just about nine kilometers from Groupama Stadium. The link is the Rhônexpress — an express tram to Part-Dieu in about 29 to 30 minutes, running every quarter of an hour. And a tip that's worth time: it stops at the Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie and Meyzieu stations, both of which connect to line T3 — meaning you can get from the airport to the stadium without going down into central Lyon at all. Alternative: a flight to Paris and a TGV train from Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu station — about one hour 53 minutes on the fast trains, with about 28 trains a day.
Does an Israeli need a visa to fly to the match?
No. Israelis enter Schengen-area countries visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and all that's required is a valid passport. Worth knowing what's coming: the European Union is launching the ETIAS authorization system in the last quarter of 2026. Once it takes effect, an online authorization will be required in advance, at a cost of €7, valid for three years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first. As of today the system is not active and no action is required from you. Important warning: the EU warns that many sites impersonate the official site, use the EU logo and charge inflated fees or steal passport and credit card details. There is only one official site — europa.eu/etias — and any address not on the europa.eu domain is not official.
Where's the best place to sit at Groupama Stadium?
For the atmosphere at Groupama Stadium, sit in Virage Nord or Virage Sud, where the ultras sit in both. Lyon's ultras sit on both ends and not just one — which is unusual. Bad Gones 1987, the large, veteran group founded in 1987, sits in Virage Nord and is considered the beating heart of the terraces; facing them, in Virage Sud, sits the Lyon 1950 group with about two thousand one hundred members, officially recognized by the club in 2010 and known mainly for its pyrotechnics. Together the two sides create the atmosphere. Away fans get a corner in the upper tier under the roof — the highest and most distant section in the stadium, with separate, isolated access. An honest note: when the stadium is full — against PSG, Marseille or in Europe — the atmosphere is among the strongest in France. In regular league matches against smaller opponents, the sheer size cools it down.
What's special about Olympique Lyonnais?
Olympique Lyonnais won seven consecutive French titles between 2002 and 2008 — an unprecedented run in France. It's the club that defined an entire decade of French football, and no French club has matched that run since. Its stadium is a private asset — very rare in France, where most stadiums are municipally owned — and part of the OL Vallée complex the club built around it. Its standout international achievement is an Anglo-Italian Cup in 1976, beating Wimbledon in the final. The main rivalry is the derby against Saint-Étienne, a long-standing territorial rivalry — but this season Saint-Étienne remain in Ligue 2. The season opened with a change of ownership: Michele Kang acquired control of the club after a financially turbulent period, and the French football finance authority approved in July 2026 for it to continue in Ligue 1 under a wage cap only — after a year in which it faced the threat of administrative relegation. Coach Paulo Fonseca has been in charge since January 2025.
What's Lyon's big match in the 2026/27 season?
Lyon's big match is Le Olympico against Marseille at Groupama Stadium, on Sunday 13 December 2026. It's Lyon's biggest rivalry, and one of the few matches that fill the stadium to the very last seat. After it: PSG at home on Sunday 9 May 2027. An important note about Europe: contrary to what's written in many places, fourth place in France does not grant direct entry to the Champions League league phase — Lyon enter via the third qualifying round, against Sparta Prague. Whoever loses there drops automatically into the Europa League league phase, so European nights at Groupama Stadium are guaranteed in every scenario — only the exact format isn't known yet. Lyon open the league away against Toulouse on 22 August 2026, and their first home match is on 29 August. There's no traditional derby this season — Saint-Étienne stayed in Ligue 2.
