About the stadium
Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which everyone in Genoa simply calls Marassi after the district where it sits, was inaugurated in January 1911 with a match between Genoa and Inter — making it the oldest football facility in Italy still in use. In 1933 it was named after Luigi Ferraris, a Genoa player who fell in the First World War and was awarded a silver medal for valor; at the renaming ceremony his medal was buried next to the goal beneath the North Stand. The 1926 ticket-office building is the only part that survives from the old stadium. The renovation that set its current appearance was carried out between 1987 and 1989, designed by architect Vittorio Gregotti, ahead of the 1990 Italy World Cup — and it was done stand by stand over about 26 months, while the city's two clubs kept playing in it. The result is a stadium in a distinctly English style: fully covered, with no athletics track, the stands right up against the touchline, and four corner towers with tension cables carrying the roofs, which have become a landmark on Genoa's skyline. The footprint stayed within the outline of the old structure, because the stadium sits in the heart of a dense residential neighborhood — and that's exactly what also explains the parking crunch around it. The official capacity the club publishes is 33,205 seats, most of them covered, and it's unique in being home to two rival league clubs — Genoa since 1911 and Sampdoria since 1946.
FAQ
How do you get tickets for a Genoa match?
Tickets for Genoa matches are personalized, and both purchase and entry require a valid ID. The ticket is personalized — the club states this explicitly: the ticket is nominative, and a valid ID must be shown at purchase. An ID is also required to enter the stadium. Beneath that there's another layer: the club's loyalty card, which is required to buy a season ticket and, for some matches, even for the regular stands, and it has to be issued in advance — for one match the club even set a cutoff date for issuing it before the sale even opened. Season tickets were sold in stages: first a priority window for last season's season-ticket holders, then a short window for changing seats, and then a free-sale phase that the club explicitly said it would only 'assess' whether to open at all — meaning there's no guarantee it will open. Transferring a ticket's name is possible, but only through the official channel and under conditions: the recipient must have their own loyalty card, must not already hold a ticket for that match, and must belong to the same age category. The most important thing to understand: the club reserves the authority to suspend the validity of a ticket that has already been sold, temporarily or permanently, with no refund — and this applies explicitly both to anyone who bought or sold through an unofficial channel and to anyone who enters with a ticket that isn't in their own name. Note the wording: this is discretionary authority, not automatic cancellation, and we won't claim more than what is written. And finally, the mechanism that surprises every tourist: before each match individually, the government authority for sporting events issues a decision restricting sales by place of residence — not by citizenship. Last season, for example, in one match sales were banned to residents of an entire region, and in an away match residents of Liguria were restricted to the away section only, under a fixed quota, with non-transferable tickets. This decision immediately overrides even tickets already purchased, and it is published only close to the match. TikTik obtains tickets for Genoa matches at the Ferraris without a loyalty card, without waiting for a sales window to open, and without depending on a last-minute decision.
How do you get to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium?
To reach Genoa's Luigi Ferraris Stadium, take the train to Brignole station, then continue on foot or by bus. Let's start with a warning that will save you a trip in the wrong direction: the address listed on the club's website is its registered office in the Foce neighborhood — not the stadium. The stadium itself is in the Marassi neighborhood, and the four streets bordering it according to the club's official map are Corso De Stefanis on the Distinti side, Via Jean Monnet on the Tribuna side, Via Clavarezza on the north-stand side, and Via Casata Centurione on the south side. The nearest station is Genova Brignole. The city's second station, Piazza Principe, is farther away, and trains connect the two roughly every five minutes. The club says it's a ten-minute walk from Brignole through the tunnel on the right and then along the road that runs beside the stream — the actual distance is about a kilometer and two hundred meters, so that's an optimistic estimate; plan for a bit more. Genoa's metro line ends at Brignole and doesn't reach the stadium — it's only useful for getting to the station, and from there it's bus or on foot. And now the part that calls for caution: the club's official arrival page is outdated. It lists bus lines, some of which no longer exist on the network — one line listed there doesn't exist at all with the transit operator, another exists but doesn't stop at any of the stadium's stops. We cross-checked the list against the transit operator's official data file, which the municipality publishes as open data and updates weekly (the version we checked is from 5 August 2026). The lines that actually stop at the stadium stations, according to that file, are 13, 48, 37 and 14 — the most frequent on the schedule — alongside a few lower-frequency lines. The stops themselves are right next to the stadium: Monnet/Stadio is about 140 meters from the stands, and the De Stefanis stops are within a similar range. There are also special matchday bus services from various points in the city — they don't appear on the regular timetable, so they need to be checked separately for each match.
Is there parking at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium?
There is no fan parking lot at Genoa's Luigi Ferraris Stadium, and the surrounding area is restricted to residents on matchdays. This is a direct result of the geography — the stadium is built inside a dense residential neighborhood, between four city streets. The club itself lists only three parking facilities, and all of them are some distance away: the Canevari lot on Via Canevari, a lot at Piazza della Vittoria, and a facility on the east side of the city. And the club also warns explicitly that the area around the stadium is a restricted parking zone on matchdays. What that means in practice, according to the municipality: parking is allowed for residents only, from two hours before the match until an hour after the final whistle, across a wide area that extends south and toward the surrounding hills. Enforcement is not theoretical — the municipality's traffic orders use the wording 'no parking, forced towing,' and the local press reports waves of tickets and tow-aways on matchdays. A note of honesty: the municipal page detailing the arrangement carries an old date, and it's only indirectly corroborated by recent coverage — so it's worth checking close to the match. For those arriving by car: home fans should exit the motorway at Genova Est, and from there follow signs toward the center and the stadium. For away fans the exit is set separately for each match — last season, for one particular match, the official instruction was to exit specifically at Genova Ovest, park at a dedicated facility, and continue from there by the transit operator's shuttle. Don't assume this is fixed. The bottom line is simple: arrive by train to Brignole and continue by bus or on foot.
How do you get from Israel to a Genoa match?
There's no direct flight from Tel Aviv to Genoa — the practical route is via Milan and then by train. We checked the official destination list of Genoa Airport — Israel doesn't appear on it at all — and a live search on two different dates, autumn and winter, also returned zero direct options. The practical route is via Milan. Malpensa Airport has direct flights from Tel Aviv, and on both test dates there were two departures a day — meaning it looks like a year-round route; flight time is about four hours and fifteen minutes. Bergamo Airport showed a direct flight in October but not in January, which suggests seasonality, so don't rely on it for winter. From Malpensa you continue in two stages: a train from the terminal to Milan, roughly every half hour for most of the day, and then a direct train to Milano–Genova. The Italian rail operator states there are up to 30 direct connections a day between Milan and Genoa, so there's no need to plan around a single train. Let's be honest about the journey time: the official sources disagree — one operator publishes 1 hour 39 minutes, while a live check on the other operator's timetable returned between two hours fifteen minutes and three hours, depending on the train type. Plan for the higher end of the range. The trains arrive at Genova Piazza Principe, and most continue on to Brignole as well, which is the stadium's station. Another option worth knowing about: from Bergamo there's a direct bus to Genoa, a few trips a day, about three hours fifteen minutes, arriving in the Piazza Principe area. And for those who do land at Genoa's own airport on a connecting flight: there's a dedicated bus line to the city center, about half an hour, with around 23 departures a day until midnight, ending at Piazza Verdi near Brignole station; and in addition, a short shuttle to the train station next to the airport, every quarter hour between 6am and 10pm.
Does an Israeli need a visa to fly to the match?
No. Israelis enter Schengen-area countries visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and all that's required is a valid passport. Worth knowing what's coming: the European Union is launching the ETIAS authorization system in the last quarter of 2026. Once it takes effect, an online authorization will be required in advance, at a cost of €7, valid for three years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first. As of today the system is not active and no action is required from you. Important warning: the EU warns that many sites impersonate the official site, use the EU logo and charge inflated fees or steal passport and credit card details. There is only one official site — europa.eu/etias — and any address not on the europa.eu domain is not official.
Where's the best place to sit at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium?
At Genoa's Luigi Ferraris, the atmosphere stand is the Gradinata Nord — that's how the club itself puts it. Four sides, each with a name: Gradinata Nord in the north, Distinti on one side (three full tiers), Gradinata Zena in the south, and the Tribuna opposite — with upper and lower levels, the lounge and the boxes. The atmosphere lives in the Gradinata Nord, and this is a rare case where we can write it without guessing, because the club itself puts it this way: the North Stand is 'the heart of Genoa's fans,' it has been sold out for decades already, and it's the stage for the famous choreography. And now a trap you need to know before buying a ticket: the South Stand is the same physical stand under two different names. At Genoa's home matches it's called Gradinata Zena — the club changed the name in 2023 — and at Sampdoria's home matches, who share the same stadium, it's called Gradinata Sud, and that's where their ultras sit. Any map online that says 'Sud = Sampdoria ultras' is describing a Sampdoria match, not a Genoa one. Two notes of honesty. First: the location of the away section isn't marked at all on Genoa's official map — what circulates online is based on a very old municipal decision, so we won't present it as fact. Second: there's no family stand at the stadium and no officially defined quiet stand. The Distinti, which is the neutral long side, and the main Tribuna are the calmer choice — but that's our own inference, not a club label. On entry: a valid ID is mandatory, and the official list of prohibited items includes canned drinks and glass or plastic bottles, hard liquor, stones, knives and throwable objects, noise-making devices (except single-beat drums and approved megaphones), laser pointers, flammable or staining substances, SLR cameras and binoculars and unapproved recording equipment, and signs and banners without approval from the security committee. Entry while intoxicated is prohibited, and any racist expression is prohibited. And to finish, two things worth stating explicitly: the club doesn't publish the gate-opening time, and it doesn't publish any bag policy at all — no size limit, no ban, and no bag-check service. We read the regulations and the ticketing pages from end to end, so we won't invent numbers.
What's special about Genoa's 2026/27 season?
Genoa opens the 2026/27 season with Daniele De Rossi on the bench, after avoiding relegation. The headline of the season is De Rossi — one of the biggest names in Italian football, former Roma captain, appointed in November 2025, who managed to keep Genoa up; the automatic extension clause in his contract was triggered by staying up, and he continues into this season. The captain is Johan Vásquez, who signed through 2028. In the summer the club brought in Swiss midfielder Djibril Sow from Sevilla on a permanent transfer, attacking midfielder Tommaso Baldanzi whose loan from Roma became permanent, Hamed Junior Traorè from Marseille, and Mario Mitaj on loans with an option. Last season the team finished with 41 points and stayed up in Serie A — on the exact table position there are two sources giving two different answers, so we won't state a number. And now the thing that matters most to a tourist buying a flight, and we're stating it explicitly: there's talk circulating about a huge renovation of the Ferraris ahead of Euro 2032. The project was indeed approved in July 2026, but the completion target for the works is end of March 2027 — that is, after the end of this season — and it's planned to be carried out in stages precisely so league matches can continue. There's no closure of any kind and no temporary move to another stadium, and this has been confirmed three ways: the club is selling tickets for home matches at the Ferraris, the official fixture list schedules all its home matches there, and the opponent in matchday one publishes on its own site that the match is at the Ferraris. What will change — once the works are complete, capacity will drop to 31,603 seats, and since this is a rolling project, sectors or capacity may change during the season, especially since the stadium is shared with Sampdoria and the schedule there is busy. Worth checking with the club close to the match.
What's Genoa's big match of the 2026/27 season?
Genoa's big match of the 2026/27 season is against Napoli at the Ferraris, 22 August 2026. The Derby della Lanterna against Sampdoria — Genoa's derby, one of the most charged in Italy — will not take place in the league this season. Sampdoria plays in Serie B, and this is confirmed on its own official site. A meeting is possible only in the cup, and it's not yet scheduled. So what is on? The season's first home match is also the biggest: Genoa vs. Napoli, Saturday 22 August 2026 at 20:45, in matchday one — a date and time confirmed by two official sources, Genoa's and the opponent's. This is the safest match to plan a flight around. Just before it, on 16 August 2026 at 18:30, there's a Coppa Italia round-of-32 match at the Ferraris. The rest of the big home matches according to the club's published schedule: Juventus on 28 October 2026, Milan on 8 November, Atalanta on 14 February 2027, Lazio on 28 February, Roma on 14 March and Inter on 4 April. And here's a warning that must be said: only one official source publishes these dates, and a third-party site gives completely different dates. That same site also claimed Genoa plays away against Napoli in matchday one — a claim unambiguously disproven by two official sites — so we treat it as unreliable; but the fact remains that beyond matchday one we don't have a second confirmation. Check again before buying a flight ticket for a specific match. And as with all of Italy, kickoff times are only finalized about five matchdays in advance.
