The Artemio Franchi stadium was inaugurated on 13 September 1931 and is an architectural masterpiece — a concrete structure designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, one of the great engineers of the twentieth century, and recognized as a national monument since 1983. Its three famous elements: the Maratona Tower, 55 meters tall; three external spiral staircases, each cast as a single block of concrete; and the cantilevered roof over the main stand, with no support from below — an extraordinary innovation for its time. And here's the figure you must know before booking a flight: the stadium is in the middle of a major renovation, and the actual capacity for the 2026/27 season is only about 21,000 seats — not 43,147 and not the 35,000 that still appears on many websites. The Curva Fiesole is completely closed, and part of the Maratona will close from September 2026. The first phase of the works will finish in April 2027.
FAQ
How do you buy tickets to a Fiorentina match?
A ticket to a Fiorentina match is nominal, and buying online requires an InViola Premium card. This is the real pitfall for an Israeli, and it's worth knowing in advance. Online purchase through the official ticketing system requires a loyalty card called an InViola Premium Card for every ticket holder, in every sector except the expensive VIP boxes. That means without InViola you can only buy the most expensive seats online. The official solution: visitors from outside are exempt from the requirement — but only for an in-person purchase at the club's sales point in Florence, not online. If you're in Florence the day before the match this works; if you're trying to book in advance from Israel, it's an obstacle. And above all, the Italian rule applies: in Serie A every ticket is nominal, and at the entrance they check an ID that matches the name on the ticket — for an Israeli, a passport. In addition, because of the construction the club states in advance that the seat purchased isn't guaranteed for all matches and season-ticket holders may be moved temporarily. The allocation for away fans is limited to just 300 seats in the league. TikTik obtains tickets to Fiorentina matches without an InViola card and without going to the box office in Florence.
How do you get to the Artemio Franchi stadium?
The Artemio Franchi stadium is reached by train from Santa Maria Novella station to Campo di Marte station. The stadium is in the Campo di Marte district, about three kilometers from Florence's historic center — too far to walk from the Duomo. The best way: a local train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station to Firenze Campo di Marte station, just six minutes' ride, and from there about 400 meters on foot — five minutes. By bus: lines 11, 17, 20 and 21A stop nearby, and on match days the lines are reinforced. Note: there's no tram line to the stadium. A new line with a "Stadio" stop is under construction and won't finish until 2029, and in the meantime the tram construction site itself adds traffic disruptions around the ground.
Is there parking at the Artemio Franchi stadium?
There's no large official parking lot at the Artemio Franchi stadium, and the streets around it close on match day. Some of them are also subject to traffic orders. The nearest parking lot is the multi-story one at Piazza Alberti — just over 300 spaces, about a ten-minute walk, and it fills up fast. Around the area there's paid "blue line" street parking between 08:00 and 20:00 on weekdays. The council is also planning a dedicated restricted-traffic zone for match days, and generally pushes fans toward the train and bicycles instead of private cars. With a train that arrives five minutes' walk from the gate, there's really no reason to arrive any other way.
How do you get from Israel to a Fiorentina match?
For a Fiorentina match you fly to Florence airport, which is connected to the city center by a direct tram line. Florence has its own airport, and the tram runs from it — about 35 minutes to the end of the line, and less to the stop near the central train station. A common alternative: a flight to Pisa, and from there a short high-speed train to Pisa Centrale station and then about an hour to Florence. And if you're already on an Italy tour: from Rome the high-speed train reaches Florence in just an hour and 12 minutes, with more than thirty connections a day, and from Milan in under an hour and 42 minutes. Florence is one of the most convenient cities in Italy for combining a match with a trip.
Does an Israeli need a visa to fly to the match?
No. Israelis enter Schengen-area countries visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and all that's required is a valid passport. Worth knowing what's coming: the European Union is launching the ETIAS authorization system in the last quarter of 2026. Once it takes effect, an online authorization will be required in advance, at a cost of €7, valid for three years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first. As of today the system is not active and no action is required from you. Important warning: the EU warns that many sites impersonate the official site, use the EU logo and charge inflated fees or steal passport and credit card details. There is only one official site — europa.eu/etias — and any address not on the europa.eu domain is not official.
Where's the best place to sit at the Franchi?
In the 2026/27 season Fiorentina's noisy stand is the Curva Ferrovia — the Fiesole is closed for renovation. This season the answer is different from usual. Historically, the Curva Fiesole was the heart of Fiorentina's organized fans and one of the strongest curvas in Italy — but it's completely closed because of the construction, and the ultras have all moved to the opposite end. That means in the 2026/27 season the noisy stand is the Curva Ferrovia, not the Fiesole, and anyone looking for atmosphere should head there. The Tribuna is the covered stand, and facing it is the Maratona — part of which will close during the season. Note that the club itself warns that certain sectors may close or be restricted during the season, so it's worth checking the current seating map and not relying on old maps online. Away fans sit in the outer wedge, with an allocation of just 300 seats.
What's special about Fiorentina?
Fiorentina is celebrating its centenary this season — it was founded on 29 August 1926. It's its centenary season, and the centenary ceremony was held at the Franchi on that exact date. The purple color, the viola, is unique in Italian football and identified with the city itself. Its stadium is a protected national monument — any intervention in it is subject to approval by the antiquities authority, which is why the current renovation preserves the historic concrete instead of demolishing and rebuilding. The bitterest rivalry is with Juventus, rooted in the 1981/82 title race and Roberto Baggio's controversial transfer to Turin in 1990. The new coach is Fabio Grosso — the 2006 World Cup winner, the man who scored the decisive penalty in the final — who was appointed on 8 June 2026 on a contract until 2028.
What's Fiorentina's big game in the 2026/27 season?
Fiorentina's big game is Juventus at the Franchi, on 8 November 2026. It's the club's sharpest rivalry, and in a reduced stadium of about 21,000 seats it's the toughest ticket of the year. The other big home matches: Napoli already on 20 September 2026 at 12:30, Inter on 21 February 2027, Milan on 11 April and Roma on 9 May 2027. Fiorentina isn't playing in Europe this season after finishing in 15th place, so the schedule is free of midweek matches. The club opens the season away against Roma on Monday 24 August 2026, and the first home league match is held on 29 August against Frosinone — ending with the centenary celebration ceremony. Even before that, on 14 August, an Italian Cup match is held at the Franchi.
