About the stadium
Stade Louis II is one of the strangest and most spectacular structures in European football. It doesn't sit on the ground: the whole pitch rests 8.35 meters above street level, on the roof of an underground car park. Beneath and around the stands is packed an entire sports complex spanning about thirty thousand square meters — a sports hall for five thousand people, an aquatic center, and a huge car park directly under the grass. Its visual trademark is the nine large arches at the end where away fans sit. The stadium was inaugurated on 25 January 1985 in the Fontvieille district, built entirely on land reclaimed from the sea, and its construction used 120,000 cubic meters of concrete and thousands of tons of steel. Attendance record: 20,000 spectators against Sampdoria on 3 April 1990. For 2026/27: the Principality's government is carrying out modernization works, the Premières stand is closed for the whole season and its season-ticket holders have been moved to another stand, and new seats in a red-and-white mosaic pattern are being installed gradually through May 2027.
FAQ
How do you buy tickets to a Monaco match?
Tickets to Monaco matches at Stade Louis II are simply easy to buy — average occupancy is only about 44 percent. This is the most convenient answer on all these pages. Monaco is one of the few big clubs in Europe where an ordinary person gets in without a fight, and the numbers back it up — average home league attendance last season was about 8,150 spectators, only about 44 percent occupancy, and the emptiest match in all of Ligue 1 that season was actually at Louis II. There's no season-ticket waiting list and no membership required. Ticketing is fully digital through the official ticket site or the app, and sales for home matches open at least 15 days before. Two things worth knowing: the ticket is personalized — a name must be attached to every ticket at least 90 hours before kick-off, and the QR code is generated in the app at that point; and the gates open two hours before. The one exception: against PSG and against Marseille demand is entirely different. TikTik gets tickets to those matches too.
How do you get to Stade Louis II?
You get to Stade Louis II on bus routes 4 and 6 to the "Stade Louis II" stop in Monaco. Monaco as a whole is small, so almost every journey is a short walk or a ride of a few minutes. Monaco-Monte-Carlo train station is about a quarter of an hour's walk from the stadium, according to the club itself. Within Monaco: local bus routes 4 and 6 stop at the "Stade Louis II" stop, and route 6 runs the route from Fontvieille via Casino Square — meaning a single direct ride from Monte Carlo to the stadium. From Nice and Menton: the coastal bus route, running every ten to fifteen minutes on weekdays. Note: the club's official website still points to the route under its old number — the route was changed in April 2024. And for evening matches: according to the club, the last trains from Monaco leave at 22:33 and 23:28, so it's worth checking on matchday.
Is there parking at Stade Louis II?
Yes — under Stade Louis II there's an underground car park with about 1,700 matchday spaces. And this is a genuine, rare advantage. Under the pitch itself there's a multi-level underground car park with about 1,700 spaces, and the club publishes a flat rate of six euros on matchday. Spaces are limited, so it's worth arriving early. Around the stadium there are nine more public car parks within Monaco. By private car you arrive from the A8 motorway at exit 56-Monaco or via the coast road. In practice, given Monaco's small size and its dense public transport, most visitors don't really need a car.
How do you get from Israel to a Monaco match?
From Israel you fly to Nice, the relevant airport for Monaco — about 22 kilometers from the stadium, about thirty minutes by car. The direct public-transport link is an express bus from both terminals to Monaco, about 45 minutes, running every half hour to an hour. A very convenient alternative: a train from Nice to Monaco-Monte-Carlo station — about 22 to 25 minutes along one of the most beautiful rail lines in Europe, right along the coastline. And for anyone who wants to splurge: Monaco's heliport is right next to the stadium, and a helicopter flight from Nice takes about seven minutes. Monaco is an excellent weekend destination, so combining a match with a getaway on the Riviera works especially well here.
Does an Israeli need a visa to fly to the match?
No. Israelis enter Schengen-area countries visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and all that's required is a valid passport. Worth knowing what's coming: the European Union is launching the ETIAS authorization system in the last quarter of 2026. Once it takes effect, an online authorization will be required in advance, at a cost of €7, valid for three years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first. As of today the system is not active and no action is required from you. Important warning: the EU warns that many sites impersonate the official site, use the EU logo and charge inflated fees or steal passport and credit card details. There is only one official site — europa.eu/etias — and any address not on the europa.eu domain is not official.
Where's the best place to sit at Louis II?
For the atmosphere at Louis II, sit in the Pesage stand, home of the Ultras Monaco 1994 group. The four stands are named after their entry gates: Honneurs — the main one, with the benches and the official platform; Premières — the long stand opposite, closed for the whole 2026/27 season because of the works; and Pesages and Populaires behind the goals. The loudest crowd sits in Pesage: that's where the Ultras Monaco 1994 group is based, founded around the 1994 Champions League match against Barcelona, and known specifically as a non-violent, non-political group. Away fans sit in Populaires. And an honest note on the atmosphere: an athletics track surrounds the pitch and keeps the stands away from the grass, and combined with low occupancy this creates a relatively quiet atmosphere for the level of football on show. The real pocket of atmosphere is Pesage. On the other hand — sightlines are excellent from almost anywhere, and you can pick a good seat without a fight for it.
What's special about Monaco?
Monaco is an independent principality of fewer than 40,000 residents that fields a team in the French league. And it's one of the best teams in it. The stadium, built on top of a car park roof, minutes from Casino Square and the marina, turns matchday into an experience with no equal: a morning promenade, an afternoon of Champions League-level football, and an evening on the Riviera. The club is also known as one of Europe's great player factories — Kylian Mbappé, Bernardo Silva, Antoine Griezmann and many others broke through here. The new coach is Filipe Luís, the 40-year-old Brazilian who played in his career for Atlético Madrid and Chelsea, appointed on 6 July 2026 on a contract until 2028 — he arrives after an outstanding spell at Flamengo, where he won the Brazilian championship and the Copa Libertadores and was named South American Coach of the Year.
What's Monaco's big match in the 2026/27 season?
Monaco's big match this season is against Marseille at Louis II, on Sunday 30 August 2026. Kick-off is at 20:45, and it's also the season's first home league match. Next in importance: PSG at Louis II on 30 January 2027, and the Côte d'Azur derby against Nice on 2 January 2027 — two matches where the stadium really does fill up. Before all of these comes a European night: Monaco enter the Conference League play-off by virtue of their seventh-place finish, with a home match at Louis II on Thursday 27 August 2026; the opponent was set on 13 August as Poland's Górnik Zabrze, after they beat Ferencváros of Hungary in the Europa League qualifiers — 1:0 in Budapest and 1:1 in Zabrze. The away match in Zabrze is on 20 August 2026. Monaco open the league away against Le Havre on 23 August 2026, and close the season at home on 29 May 2027.
