How the Champions League format works

Instead of a group stage, all 36 teams are ranked in a single table. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. At the end of the league phase:

• Places 1–8 advance directly to the Round of 16.
• Places 9–24 play in the knockout play-offs, and the eight winners advance to the Round of 16.
• Places 25–36 are eliminated from the competition.

For ticket buyers, this means two things. Already in the autumn there are huge matches between the big clubs, and you can plan them in advance. The knockout-stage pairings, on the other hand, are only known after the draws, so it is worth leaving your details and getting an update as soon as the matches are set.

Champions League Final 2027 in Madrid

The final will be held on Saturday, 5 June 2027, at the Metropolitano Stadium, the home of Atlético Madrid. It is the first final at the Metropolitano since 2019. Tickets for the final are sold in very small quantities and only start to appear once the teams are known. If you want to be there, leave your details in the form and we will get back to you when the option opens.
