About the stadium

The desire to expand the stadium has created tension over the years with residents in the area and with the municipality. In the late 1960s, proposals to move to another location arose at least twice, and in 1995 there was a controversial proposal to move to the adjacent Leazes Park. In the end the club remained, and this is the reason for the stadium's distinctive appearance today: the stands are asymmetrical.
Besides club football, St James Park has hosted national team matches, football matches at the 2012 Olympics, the rugby league Magic Weekend, Rugby World Cup matches, Premiership rugby matches, and England rugby team test matches. The stadium has also hosted charity matches and rock concerts, and has appeared as a backdrop in films and reality shows.
