The venue is at the intersection of Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues. It was built in 1928 by Paramount Studios, designed by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp, and opened as a movie palace that also occasionally hosted jazz, blues, and early rock and roll performances.

The original venue had 4,084 seats, a ceiling painted with clouds, and large chandeliers. Artists who performed there over the years include Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Holly.
