From 2 Cool 4 Skool to Arirang: BTS’s journey

BTS is a South Korean boy band formed in 2010. Its seven members are Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jung Kook. They contribute to writing or producing much of the band’s material.

The name is an abbreviation of the Korean phrase Bangtan Sonyeondan, meaning “Bulletproof Boy Scouts.” According to J-Hope, the name expresses the band’s desire to block stereotypes, criticism and expectations that hurt teenagers like bullets. In 2017, the band announced that the name would also stand for Beyond the Scene, expanding its meaning to represent the journey from adolescence to adulthood.

The original idea was a hip-hop group built around RM, a rapper from Seoul’s underground scene. Bang Si-hyuk, CEO of Big Hit Entertainment, eventually decided to form an idol group in which each member could express himself as an individual. The members lived together and practiced for up to 15 hours a day. In 2013, the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool was released, along with its lead single “No More Dream.”

In 2014, their first studio albums were released: Dark & Wild in Korean and Wake Up in Japanese. Wings, released in 2016, was the band’s first album to sell one million copies in South Korea. Over time, the band expanded its style to encompass a wide range of genres. The songs explore mental health, the struggles of teenagers at school, growing up, loss, the journey to self-love and the cost of fame.

They were the first Korean act to receive a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for the single “Mic Drop.” Love Yourself: Tear, released in 2018, was the first album by an act from South Korea to reach number one on the Billboard 200. In 2020, “Dynamite,” which was nominated for a Grammy, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200. It was followed by “Butter,” “Permission to Dance” and “My Universe,” among others, which topped the US chart.

They also have an impressive live record. They were the first Asian act, and the first non-English-speaking act, to sell out shows at Wembley Stadium and Rose Bowl Stadium. This happened during the Love Yourself World Tour in 2019. In 2020 and 2021, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) named them Global Recording Artist of the Year.

In 2022, the band announced a break from group activities so the members could complete their 18 months of military service in South Korea. By 2025, they had all completed their service. Arirang, released in 2026, is the band’s first album in almost four years. It produced “Swim,” their seventh single to reach number one in the United States.

The band members also worked beyond music. They spoke at three sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, and in 2017 they launched the Love Myself campaign against violence with UNICEF. In 2018, they became the youngest recipients of South Korea’s Order of Cultural Merit, for spreading Korean culture and language.
