From a production of Grease in Sligo to twelve studio albums

The story of Westlife begins in Sligo, Ireland. Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan studied together at Summerhill College and participated in a school production of the musical Grease. In 1997 they formed, with three other friends from Sligo, a vocal band called Six as One, which was later called IOYOU.

Filan's mother contacted Louis Walsh, the manager of the Irish boy band Boyzone. The lineup changed, auditions were held in Dublin, and from them Nicky Byrne and Brian McFadden joined. The new five-piece was formed in 1998 under the name Westside, and changed its name to Westlife because there was already a band with that name. In the same year it supported Boyzone and Backstreet Boys at their shows in Dublin, and Ronan Keating from Boyzone joined Walsh in managing the band.

The first single, “Swear It Again”, was released in 1999 and reached number one in Ireland and the UK. After it, “If I Let You Go”, “Flying Without Wings”, the double single “I Have a Dream” / “Seasons in the Sun”, which was the Christmas number one in the UK in 1999, and “Fool Again” also reached number one. Thus Westlife became the only male band whose every single released from one of its albums reached number one in the UK.

The first album, Westlife (1999), was named after the band. After it were released Coast to Coast (2000), its first album to reach number one in the UK, World of Our Own (2001) and Turnaround (2003), which features “Mandy” by Barry Manilow. In 2002 the first greatest hits compilation was released, Unbreakable – The Greatest Hits Volume 1.

In 2004 McFadden left for a solo career, and Westlife continued as a four-piece. During this period the cover albums ...Allow Us to Be Frank (2004) and The Love Album (2006) were released, and alongside them Face to Face (2005), Back Home (2007), Where We Are (2009) and Gravity (2010). The song “You Raise Me Up” from 2005 earned the band the “Song of the Year” award for the fourth time.

In 2012 the band broke up, and in 2018 it resumed activities. After the reunion Spectrum (2019) and Wild Dreams (2021) were released, and in 2026 the compilation 25: The Ultimate Collection was released. In total Westlife released twelve studio albums: four as a five-piece and eight as a four-piece.

In Ireland and the UK the band has 11 albums and 16 singles that reached number one. It has sold more than 55 million records, holds four Guinness World Records and has won, among others, two Brit Awards.

Currently Westlife operates as a trio: Filan, Byrne and Egan. Feehily is on a long break since 2022, after several periods of illness.

Ticket only or package for a Westlife concert?

Two travel tips

  • For a weekday concert, like in Hamburg, Antwerp, or Cologne, it's better not to plan on a flight that lands the same day. It's worth arriving in the city a day earlier, so that a flight delay doesn't affect your plans.
  • When ordering a ticket only, it's worth choosing a hotel from which it's convenient to get to the venue by public transport, for example to Co-op Live in Manchester or to SSE Arena in Belfast.
