U2 from Dublin: four members and 15 studio albums

U2 are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976. The band has four members: Bono on lead vocals, the Edge on lead guitar, keyboards and vocals, Adam Clayton on bass guitar, and Larry Mullen Jr. on drums and percussion.

The band's roots are in post-punk, and their style has evolved throughout their career. All along, it has retained an anthemic quality, driven by Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's effects-based, chiming guitar sound. Bono's lyrics address personal, social and political themes, and often incorporate spiritual imagery.

From Boy to The Joshua Tree

Within four years of forming, the band signed with Island Records. Their debut album, Boy, was released in 1980.

The band's fifth album, The Joshua Tree, released in 1987, made them international stars. It was their biggest success, both with critics and in sales. It produced the band's only two singles to reach number one in the United States: With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.

Achtung Baby and the years that followed

With their seventh album, Achtung Baby, released in 1991, and the multimedia Zoo TV Tour, the band took a new musical direction. It was influenced by alternative rock, industrial music and electronic dance music. The band also adopted a more ironic and lighthearted image.

In 2023, Songs of Surrender, an album of re-recorded songs, was released.

To date, the band has released 15 studio albums. It is estimated to have sold around 170 million records worldwide.
