From Radioactive to Enemy: Imagine Dragons' hits

Imagine Dragons is an American pop rock band and the first rock band to have four songs—Radioactive, Demons, Believer and Thunder—each surpass one billion streams. Its other songs include It's Time, Whatever It Takes, Natural and Enemy.

The band was formed in 2008 and is based in Las Vegas, Nevada. It currently has three members: vocalist Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon and bassist Ben McKee.

The band's debut single, It's Time, was released in 2012 and reached the top 20 on various charts around the world. That same year, its debut album, Night Visions, was released and reached number two in the United States. The album produced Radioactive and Demons, two chart-topping singles, and was certified platinum in 2013.

Rolling Stone magazine called Radioactive "the biggest rock hit of the year." The song held the record for the most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. MTV called the band "the biggest breakout band of the year," and Billboard named it "Breakthrough Band of 2013" and "Biggest Band of 2017." In 2018, it ranked first in the Top Artists – Duo/Group category in Billboard's year-end chart.

Smoke + Mirrors, Evolve and Origins

The second studio album, Smoke + Mirrors, released in 2015, reached number one in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The third album, Evolve, released in 2017, produced three chart-topping singles: Believer, Thunder and Whatever It Takes. These songs made Imagine Dragons the artist with the most weeks at number one on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart.

Natural was released as a single from the fourth album, Origins, in 2018. It was the band's fifth song to top the Hot Rock Songs chart.

Mercury and Loom

Mercury – Acts 1 & 2, a double album featuring Enemy, a hit that reached the top five in the United States, was released in 2022. In 2024, Loom was released, the band's first album without longtime drummer Daniel Platzman.

According to Billboard, Believer, Thunder and Radioactive were the three most successful rock songs of the 2010s. Imagine Dragons is also the only band in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to have four songs certified higher than Diamond.

From Provo to Las Vegas: How the band came together

In 2008, lead singer Dan Reynolds and drummer Andrew Tolman met at Brigham Young University, where they were both students. The band built a large following in their hometown of Provo, Utah, and its members later moved to Las Vegas, Reynolds' hometown.

Reynolds and Tolman brought in Andrew Beck, Dave Lemke and Aurora Florence, who played guitar, bass and piano. The five recorded demos and uploaded them to MySpace that same year, but Beck and Florence left the band later that year. The band's name is an anagram of a phrase only its members know, and Reynolds says each of them approved it.

How did Wayne Sermon and Ben McKee join?

In 2009, Tolman recruited Wayne Sermon on guitar, a longtime high school friend and graduate of Berklee College of Music. Tolman then brought in his wife, Brittany Tolman, for backing vocals and keyboards, and the band returned to performing. Lemke left soon afterward, and Sermon recruited another Berklee student, Ben McKee, to replace him on bass, completing the lineup.

The night they replaced Train

Their first big break came when Train lead singer Pat Monahan fell ill just before the 2009 Bite of Las Vegas festival. Imagine Dragons were called in to replace them and performed in front of an audience of more than 26,000. In Las Vegas, the band recorded and released their first three EPs.

Alex da Kid and Interscope

In 2011, before the record deal, McKee recruited drummer Daniel Platzman and keyboardist Theresa Flaminio. That year, the band signed with Interscope Records and began working with Grammy-winning English producer Alex da Kid. The Tolmans eventually left the band. Flaminio left around the time of the Interscope signing, and Imagine Dragons continued as a four-piece.

The band worked closely with Alex da Kid, recording their first major-label recordings with him at Westlake Recording Studios in West Hollywood, California. In 2012, the EP Continued Silence was released and reached No. 40 on the Billboard 200. Shortly afterward, the single It's Time reached No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the RIAA certified it 7x Platinum.
