From a one-man project to a band with 15 Grammy Awards

Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in Seattle in 1994. At first, they were a one-man project: Dave Grohl, who had been Nirvana's drummer. Grohl joined Nirvana in 1990, and took a guitar with him on tour, writing songs. He didn't dare play them for the band because he admired songs written by lead singer Kurt Cobain. He released an album of demo recordings called Pocketwatch, under the pseudonym Late!.

Nirvana disbanded in 1994, after Cobain's death. Grohl received offers to work with various artists, and he nearly agreed to drum for Tom Petty's band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Instead, in 1994, he went into Robert Lang Studios and recorded his own songs. He played all the instruments and sang all the vocals himself, except for a guitar part on X-Static, played by Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs.

Grohl took the name from a World War II-era term: foo fighter, a nickname for an unidentified flying object. He wanted to remain anonymous and hoped that anyone who heard the recordings would think several people were playing on them. The demo tape circulated through the industry, attracting interest from record labels.

To perform the songs on stage, Grohl formed a band. Bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith came from Sunny Day Real Estate, and guitarist Pat Smear had previously toured with Nirvana. The band made its live debut in 1995, and that same year its debut album, Foo Fighters, was released. The singles included This Is a Call, I'll Stick Around, For All the Cows, and Big Me.

The Colour and the Shape and the song Everlong

The second album, The Colour and the Shape, was released in 1997. During recording, Goldsmith left, and Grohl re-recorded most of the drum parts. Taylor Hawkins joined in his place. The album produced the singles Monkey Wrench, My Hero, and Everlong. Shortly after the album's release, Smear left and was replaced by Franz Stahl, who had played in Scream, the band Grohl drummed for before Nirvana.

Stahl was fired before recording the third album, which was released in 1999. The band continued briefly as a trio, until guitarist Chris Shiflett joined after the album was completed.

From One by One to Your Favorite Toy

The fourth album, One by One, was released in 2002, and In Your Honor followed in 2005, a double album split between acoustic songs and heavier material. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace was released in 2007. The seventh album, Wasting Light, released in 2011, was produced by Butch Vig, and saw Smear return as a permanent band member. Before then, he had often performed with the band since 2005.

Sonic Highways, released in 2014, was the soundtrack to a television miniseries directed by Grohl. Concrete and Gold, released in 2017, was the band's second album to reach number one on the US chart, and the first to feature keyboardist Rami Jaffee, who had accompanied the band in the studio and on tour for years, as a full member. Medicine at Midnight, released in 2021, was the last album before Hawkins' death in 2022. Josh Freese took his place from 2023 to 2025, and Ilan Rubin replaced him in 2025. The 11th album, But Here We Are, was released in 2023, and the 12th album, Your Favorite Toy, was released in 2026.

Today, the band members are Grohl on vocals and guitar, Mendel on bass, Smear and Shiflett on guitars, Jaffee on keyboards, and Rubin on drums. Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammy Awards, including five wins for Best Rock Album. In 2021, the band received the first Global Icon award at the MTV Video Music Awards. That same year, Foo Fighters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in their first year of eligibility.
