Shows with packages:
André Rieu is a Dutch violinist, composer and conductor, born in 1949. He is best known for founding the Johann Strauss Orchestra, an orchestra that plays waltzes. He and the orchestra perform around the world, often in stadiums.
His father was the conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra, and André began learning the violin at the age of five. He studied at the Royal Conservatory in Liège and the Maastricht Conservatory until 1973. Between 1974 and 1977, he studied at the Brussels Conservatory under violinist André Gertler, graduating with distinction and a “Premier Prix”. After playing Franz Lehár's “Gold and Silver Waltz” and seeing the audience's reaction, he decided to keep playing waltzes.
In 1978, he founded his first orchestra, the “Maastricht Salon Orchestra”. In 1987, he founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra, which started with 12 musicians and gave its first concert in 1988. As of 2020, he performs with 50 to 60 musicians. His first album, “From Holland with Love”, released in 1994, was his breakthrough, and it remained in the top ten of the Dutch album charts for more than ten years. Rieu plays a 1667 Stradivarius violin and speaks six languages: Dutch, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
Rieu faces the audience throughout the concert, conducting and playing the violin. Alongside familiar waltzes and arias, the orchestra plays songs from musicals, soundtracks, operatic pop, folk songs and popular music, and it's not unusual to see the audience get up and dance. Sometimes he combines familiar classical pieces with popular music styles, such as salsa with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
The stage design is part of the show, too. In 2008, he went on tour with a full-size replica of Empress Sisi's castle, the largest set ever taken on tour at the time. Rieu himself says he tries to create a “Gesamtkunstwerk”: a magical evening where the music, set design and costumes come together.
An American reviewer wrote about his 2017 concert at Moda Center that it felt “more like a pop concert than a classical recital”. He described it as two hours of non-stop entertainment, with a waltz or aria here and there.
Rieu has already performed in Tel Aviv: in 2018 he gave four concerts at Menora Mivtachim Arena, and in 2022 another three, postponed from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are currently no concerts in Israel available to book. Anyone who wants to see him can fly, for example, to Athens on Friday, March 12, 2027, for a concert at the O.A.C.A. Olympic Indoor Hall.
Maastricht is Rieu's hometown. He lives there in a small castle, which he says was once home to d'Artagnan. He has two concert series in the city: at MECC in December 2026 and at Vrijthof in July 2027. Tickets only are sold for all concerts in Maastricht.
It's a good idea to arrive in Maastricht a day before the concert, so a flight delay won't disrupt your plans. Choose accommodation with convenient public transport access to MECC or Vrijthof.
