From a Tuscan farm to the Sanremo stage

Andrea Bocelli is an Italian tenor, born in 1958, who sings pop, operatic pop, classical music, and opera. He broke through in 1994, winning the Newcomers category at the Sanremo Festival with “Il mare calmo della sera”. Since then, he has sold more than 90 million records.

He grew up on the family farm near the village of Lajatico, south of Pisa. He was born with glaucoma, and at age 12, after being hit in the eye by a ball during a soccer game, he lost his sight completely. He began learning piano at age six, and later also studied flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. At age 14, he won his first singing competition with “'O sole mio”.

Bocelli studied law at the University of Pisa and performed in piano bars in the evenings to make a living. After graduating, he worked for one year as a public defender.

In 1992, Italian rock singer Zucchero was looking for a tenor to record a demo of “Miserere” for Luciano Pavarotti. Pavarotti heard the recording and persuaded Zucchero to record the song with Bocelli. The song became a hit in Europe, and on Zucchero's 1993 tour, Bocelli also sang “Nessun dorma” from Puccini's Turandot. In 1994, he made his opera debut as Macduff in Verdi's Macbeth at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa.

From “Con te partirò” to Sì: songs and albums

“Con te partirò” is a duet with Sarah Brightman from Bocelli's second album, Bocelli. It's one of the best-selling singles of all time, and its English version is called “Time to Say Goodbye”. He sang “The Prayer” with Celine Dion, from the film Quest for Camelot. The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

Since 1994, he has released 15 solo pop and classical studio albums, as well as nine complete operas. Romanza is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and Sacred Arias is the best-selling classical album by a solo artist. Thanks to Sacred Arias, he entered the Guinness World Records after simultaneously holding the top three spots on the US classical albums chart. Sì, released in 2019, was his first album to reach number one in the UK and the US.

In 2010, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Celine Dion said of him: “If God had a singing voice, he would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli”.
